Overview Striking and highly architectural, Stenocactus crispatus is an absolute standout in any desert flora collection. Often referred to as the "Brain Cactus," this compact, globe-shaped Mexican native is famous for its densely packed, intensely wavy ribs. The accordion-like folds allow the cactus to expand and contract with seasonal rainfall, making it as highly adapted to harsh environments as it is beautiful. Physical Characteristics - Structure: Solitary and spherical, eventually becoming slightly cylindrical with age. - Ribs: Features 30 to 60 distinctively thin, wavy (crispate) ribs that look like the folds of a brain. - Spines: Armed with a mix of stiff, flattened central spines and radial spines that point outward, creating a protective cage around the green stem. - Blooms: In early spring to summer, it produces gorgeous, funnel-shaped flowers at the apex.
